UTV usage at deepwater

Post by dunejumper » Fri Jan 16, 2009 4:05 pm

Is there any talk of allowing UTV usage of deepwater? If not what are the concerns?

At this time, UTVs are not allowed at deepwater, only atvs and dirtbikes.
The reason utvs, even those under 50 inches of width, aren't allowed is that the FEDERAL definition of an atv is as follows:
"An ATV is a motorized vehicle having a maximum width of 50 inches, designed to be operated off-road, with handle-bars for steering, and a seat that is straddled by the operator."

The highlighted text is what keeps the utvs out. The 50 inche rule is what was decided years ago by the Federal Government as a width that would keep the damage to the environment to a minimum.

A lot of the rules defining what an atv is date back to when the government was considering banning the three wheeler. What happended was the major ORV manufactures got together with the FEDS to work things out. Had this not happened, there would be no atvs today.
I hope that this helps to shed some light on the utv issue.

Just to make clear, I'm not saying whether or not I agree with the rules, just stating what the rules are. And we have to follow them to keep this ridding area open.

Thanks for the response. That response kind of leaves me with no where to go to get that changed.

That will do a lot of good. {because the written word can not tell what tone of voice I am using I will let you all know that this was said with sarcasm.}

Ok, lets not get this thread off topic with political stuff, we can start a new thread for that. {mostly this is a not to myself.}

Shane is right, sending letters to government reps is a good start. Another thing you can do is join groups such as MOHVA, they would have more clout and maybe even some lobbyist some day.

I know St Joe park south of st Louis lets the UTV's ride, here is a web site of some locals that ride out that way. http://www.stjoepark.com/

This guy has one and rides out at st Joe once in a while, ya might try checking out his site.
